Eisenglass Care

The clear panels in our cockpit enclosure are made from clear marine vinyl commonly called Eisenglass. On Lucky Enough (our 2008 Regal 2565 Window Express), these panels are a huge part of comfortable cruising, but they also scratch and haze much more easily than people expect.

Eisenglass is not glass. It’s a soft, flexible vinyl. The key is simple: never wipe it dry, and never use household glass cleaners.

Why Eisenglass Needs Special Care

It scratches easily: dust and grit act like sandpaper.
It can haze over time: UV exposure plus poor cleaning habits accelerate clouding.
Harsh cleaners damage it: ammonia and alcohol can permanently reduce clarity.
Folding and rubbing causes wear: rolling dirty panels creates scuffs and micro-scratches.

The Golden Rules

Never wipe dry. Rinse first to remove grit.
No household glass cleaners. Avoid ammonia, Windex, vinegar, and alcohol.
No paper towels. Use clean microfiber only.
Be gentle. Light pressure and straight wipes are better than scrubbing.

Recommended Cleaning Routine

Step 1: Rinse

Use low-pressure water to rinse off dust, pollen, and grit before touching the panel. This one step prevents most scratches.

Step 2: Clean

Use a cleaner designed for clear marine vinyl. Spray lightly and wipe gently with a damp microfiber cloth.

Step 3: Protect

Quick “After Docking” Routine (Rideau-Friendly)

If the panels are dusty, rinse before the sun bakes the grit in.
If rain leaves spots, wipe gently once the surface is cool, not hot.
Never clean in direct sun on a hot day.
If you roll panels, make sure they’re clean and fully dry.

Rolling and Storage Tips

Roll, don’t fold. Folding creates creases that can turn cloudy and crack over time.
Use a soft barrier (clean cotton or microfiber) between layers when rolling.
Keep panels out of sharp contact with snaps, zippers, and rough canvas edges.
For offseason storage, store flat when possible, in a cool, dry place.

Can Scratches Be Fixed?

Light haze: often improves with the right vinyl polish and protectant.
Moderate scratches: sometimes improved, rarely removed.
Deep scratches: usually permanent on vinyl.
